Conflict Resolution Opportunities Are Everywhere
Beautiful Laguna Beach
Opportunities for conflict resolution arise in our everyday lives, often when we least expect them. A personal experience I had recently reminded me of the power of calm communication and how important it is to approach conflict with an open mind and heart.
While on a peaceful beach walk in Laguna, I captured a video of a beautiful, untouched local cove. It was pristine, perfect, and nearly empty. Wanting to share the beauty of this special spot, I posted the video, along with the beach’s sign, on my personal Instagram account.
Shortly after, a longtime local and environmental advocate reached out to me privately. He kindly pointed out a mistake I had made: by sharing the sign and location publicly, I risked drawing more visitors to the spot, which could lead to overcrowding, garbage, and pollution. He explained that he had been visiting the cove since childhood and often spent time power washing the stairs and cleaning up trash left behind by visitors.
What struck me most was not just his message but how he delivered it. He was calm, clear, and informative. He didn’t attack me or assume negative intent. Instead, he educated me on the impact my post could have on the community. He didn’t demand that I delete the post—he simply shared his perspective. After reflecting on his message, I chose to delete the post and thanked him for his calm, tactful approach.
This experience was a powerful reminder that conflict resolution isn’t about proving a point or being right. It’s about creating space for understanding. When we approach situations with curiosity, calm, and tact, we can educate, inspire change, and build stronger connections.
The next time you find yourself in a disagreement or needing to give feedback, consider:
Approaching with curiosity: Ask questions and seek to understand the other person’s perspective.
Staying calm: Emotional escalation rarely leads to positive outcomes.
Using tact: Deliver your message thoughtfully, without being offensive, and focus on the substance of the message.
Grateful for the lesson I learned that day and the reminder that every interaction holds the potential for positive conflict resolution. Let’s continue to show up with calmness and clarity, making our communities better, one conversation at a time.
